Part II Reading Comprehension (40 points]

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D.

Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line

through the center.

Passage One

For any Englishman, there can never be any discussion as to who is the world?s greatest poet and dramatist. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him: William Shakespeare. Every Englishman has some knowledge, however slight, of the work of this great writer. All of us use words, phrases and quotations from his writings that have become part of the common property of English-speaking people. Most of the time we are probably unaware of the source of the words we use, rather like the old lady who was taken to see a performance of Hamlet and complained that …it was full of well-known proverbs and quotations?!

Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the great resources of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English;Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner (or an Englishman!) to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways Shakespeare used it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners), even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare?s day.

16.It can be inferred from the first two sentences of the passage that__________.

A.English people refused to talk about great Shakespeare

B.Shakespeare?s fame as the greatest writer is not debatable

C.it is not necessary to talk about Shakespeare?s works

D.Shakespeare?s name is so well-known among readers

17.According to the passage, many English words and expressions we use today are from

___________.

A.Englishmen

B. English-speaking people

C.Shakespeare?s works

D. Hamlet, the great tragedy

18.By mentioning the number of words used in Shakespeare?s works, this passage intends to

illustrate Shakespeare?s __________.

A.cleverness in words

B. brilliance in language

C. persuasive ability

D. freedom of speech

19.To appreciate the richness of the English language, ___________ can read Shakespeare?s

plays.

A. a foreigner

B. an Englishman

C. one

D. an English beginner

20.In this passage the author mainly intends to _____________.

A.prove that English language has become various

B.tell that English words have undergone great changes

C.indicate how much Englishmen love Shakespeare

D.show how great a writer Shakespeare was

Passage Two

Currently, the misuse of the internet exists, for instance, in modifying other people's bank account through the internet, stealing other?s data and information through the internet, doing illegal commerce of drugs or arms, spreading porn, violence, or even cult through the internet. All these exert very bad influence on social stability and communal health.

It is also true that, if a computer is connected with the internet, there is a possibility for it to be intruded into, however strong the anti-virus software and firewalls are. This explains why Microsoft and anti-virus software producers release security patches and virus-recognizing updates nearly every day. Though many people are struggling to reduce the damage of internet crimes, they still cause great damage and loss every year. For example, the notorious virus worm, Nimaya, which had been produced by a 20-year-old person in Wuhan of Central China, caused over 2 million computers to break down and incurred a loss of over 50 million dollars. The wizard producer made this virus just for around 15 thousand yuan. However, the effect of this virus and the loss caused by it are far beyond many people's imagination. Though the internet is good for us for the most part, it has some serious negative effect. In my opinion, it is the duty of our government to lay down relevant laws to prevent internet crimes and reinforce the proper use of the internet by young people.

21. From the beginning of this passage, we can infer that if there is a paragraph previous to this

passage, it is most probably on __________.

A. how the internet is properly used

B. how the internet is developed

C. how the internet is invented

D. how powerful the internet is

22. According to the passage, Microsoft frequently releases security patches to _________.

A. to promote possible recurrence of safety problems

B. strengthen the functions of their software

C. keep up with the latest software development

D. prevent virus software from invading a computer

23. The twenty-year-old youth in Central China is said to be __________.

A. very clever

B. really evil

C. quite promising

D. abnormally powerful

24. According to the passage, the youth produced virus worm, Nimaya, for _________.

A. fun

B. money

C. prize

D. power

25. The author suggests that the government take up the responsibility of _________.

A. defending the young regularly

B. giving guidance to the young

C. crushing down the crimes

D. reducing the negative effects

Passage Three

The British people are great readers of newspapers. There are few homes to which one newspaper is not delivered every morning. Many households have two, or even three, newspapers every day. One newspaper may be delivered at the house, a member of the family may buy one at the station bookstall to read on the train as he goes to town, and someone else in the family may buy an evening newspaper later in the day.

Daily papers are those that are published daily from Monday to Saturday. There are the morning papers and the evening papers. The morning papers are on sale in the morning. The evening papers begin to appear during the morning, and new editions appear every two or three hours until the final edition comes out in the evening.

The London newspaper that is best known outside Great Britain is probably The Times. It began in 1785, and has a high reputation for reliable news and serious comment on the news. It calls itself an independent paper, which means that it does not give its support to a particular political party. Its leading articles give the opinions of its editorial staff, not those of the owners of the paper.

The Daily Express and the Daily Mail are also independent, though they are usually more sympathetic to Conservative than to socialist policies. The Daily Telegraph, also a serious paper with a high reputation, is not independent. It supports the Conservative Party.

Two popular papers are Daily Mirror and the Daily Sketch. These have many pages of

photographs and numerous strip cartoons. Their makeup is more exciting than those of the serious papers. The news that appears on their pages is not always the most important news: it is the news that is most interesting to the man in the street.

26. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Important people in Britain read newspapers.

B. Readers of newspapers in Britain are great people.

C. A large number of British people read a lot of newspapers.

D. have to listen to

29. Which of the following is NOT a serious paper?

C. Daily Telegraph

D. Daily Mirror

30. In the last line of the passage, “the man in the street” refers to _________.

A. the man working on the street

B. the ordinary people

C. the man wandering on the street

D. the man walking on the street

Passage four

There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to the rulers by ancient writers, who related how Achilles and many other ancient princes were given Chiron the centaur to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable of this semi-animal, semi-human teacher is meant to indicate that a prince must know how to use both natures and that without one the other is not durable.

A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and the reasons which bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be a good one; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wishes to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and show how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been able to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner and

dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived.

31. The writer does not believe that ___________.

A. the truth makes men free

Part V Essay writing (15 points)

参考作文

Parents generally believe should they plan their children?s careers, claiming they know their children well enough to decide what kind of job suits them. Many even tend to force their ideas of jobs on their children.

However, many children believe they should be left free to choose their own careers. Firstly, parents and children may not share the same interests. Secondly, children grow up in an age different from their parents?. Therefore they should be allowed to choose for themselves.

In my opinion, mutual understanding is important. On one hand, parents? view reflects their concern for children. On the other, it is the children who will be doing the job. Therefore, it is wise for parents to give them this freedom while children should consult their parents when necessary. (129 words)

Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Is that 6 a.m. workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don ' t think your fat cells won't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine (a medical journal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat calls, reducing their ability to respond to insulin ( 胰岛素) by about 30 percent. Over the long-term ,this decreased response could set-the stage for type-2 diabetes (a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), f atty liver disease and weight gain . The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there 's“ an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good ,healthy body weight ” says sleep expert Helene Emsellem ,director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase ,Maryland. (76) But Americans don ' t seem to be getting the message that we need seven to nine hours per night. More than 1 in 5 of us ,according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ,is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night ,on average. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young ,thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “ For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night ,” says Brady. Then ,a month later ,they came back for four additional nights —but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit ,researchers got a sample of their fat.(77) Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “ I was very surprised to be honest ,” he says. Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin. “ Fat cells are actually your friend ,”he says. “They 're there to store lipids( 血脂).” When lipids stay inside the cells ,your body can utilize the fat when you ' re exercising or sleeping or going about your day. “ However ,when fat cells start to become insulin resistant ,the lipids start to leach out of the fat cells and rise in the bloodstream ,” Brady says. 1.According to the passage ,lack of the sleep for a long while can probably lead to all of the following EXCEPT ______ . 第一段最后一句 A.heart disease B. weight gain C. diabetes D. liver disease 2.The main idea of the third paragraph is . 第一句 A.how to write a medical research paper B. how to avoid sleep loss C. how the research was conducted D. how to conduct a medical experiment 3.What does the word “ leach ” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Leap B. Lead. C. Lead. D. Leak . 泄露

The time of year at which you are born has an enduring influence on levels of optimism and self-reported luck, according to a research by British and Swedish scientists. May was the luckiest month in which to be born, with 50 percent of those born then considering themselves lucky, while October was the least lucky month, with just 43 percent claiming good fortune. The findings add to growing evidence that the phenomenon of luck is not all down to chance, but is affected by a person’s general disposition. Other researc h has shown that whether people think themselves fortunate depends less on objective success than on having a “glass half-full” or “half-empty” approach to life. “What we are seeing suggests that something is influencing how people perceive their luckiness. My hypothesis is that people create their own luck by traits such as optimism, that luck is a psychological phenomenon rather than a matter of blind chance,” said Professor Richard Wiseman, who led the research. The pattern of the result, with those born in spring and in summer reporting themselves luckier than those born in autumn or winter, could have two potential explanations, Professor Wiseman said. 1.According to the passage, whether people think themselves lucky or not depends on the following factors EXCEPT _______. A. one’s objective success B. one’s general disposition C. one’s attitude to life D. one’s place of birth

成人本科学士学位英语统一考试题及答案

成人本科学士学位英语统一考试题及答案 2011.11.05 PartⅠReading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating(迁徙的)route , can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,”said https://www.doczj.com/doc/be5338797.html,urel, an architect.(76)“It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is.” About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in the city each year. Often, they strike the lower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat(栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year. (77)As glass office and apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviolet(紫外线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available. Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. “You don't necessarily have to treat every window,”https://www.doczj.com/doc/be5338797.html,urel said. “It would be too expensive to do the whole building.”The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns. 1. What is the main idea of the passage? A. New York is a city of glass towers. B. Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds. C. New York adopted new safety standards for buildings. D. Glass towers are a new trend in the United States. 2. What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds? A. Climate change B. Habitat loss C. Lack of food D. Crashing into buildings. 3. What does the word “fixes”in the third paragraph probably mean? A. Choices B. Explanations C. Solutions D. Developments 4. _____are used in the alteration of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. A. Dot patterns B. Shades C. Nets D. Covers 5. Which of the fowling statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. In many cases, the whole building needs to be altered to prevent bird crashes. B. The Jacob K.Javits Convention Center is the first building to deal with the problem of bird crashes. C. About 90,000 birds are killed due to habitat loss in New York City each year. D. Unfortunately, glass designs that use ultraviolet signals are still in their early stages. Passage 2 Question 6 to 10 are based on the fowling passage: Today's students have grown up hearing more about Bill Gates than F.D.R., and they live in a world where amazing innovations(革新)are common. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital(数字的),they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship(企业家才能)education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.
