阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

At the age of sixteen, I joined a volunteer group with my dad. I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that ―our family‖ was living in a trailer(拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced.

We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house –something unusual but necessary under these

circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen.

On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, "What do you want for your new room?" Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were surprised when Josh responded, "I just want a bed."

The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.

When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning.

That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds tog tether, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway.

As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, "What is that?"

"A pillow," she replied.

"What do you do with it?" Eric continued to ask.

"When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,‖ I answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.

"Oh . . . that's soft," he said, hugging it tightly.

Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my Dad gently asks, "Do you have a pillow?"

We know exactly what he means.

Should parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond ―no‖, and public support for spanking(打屁股)has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least

once.

I was raised in a zero-tolerance(零忍受力)home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don' t feel I was damaged by it.

Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children.

But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer.

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive (反作用的)to their mental development, as well.

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks (用巴掌打)on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens wh o have never spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished.Gunnoe)s research suggests they don' t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spank.

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers (脾气).But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline(纪律)without ever turning to physical punishment.

64.According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when .

A.they were dissatisfied with her grade

D.their discipline turns out to be not strict enough

65.According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punished ____ __.

A.are less aggressive toward others when they get older

B.have slower physical development

C.benefit from occasional spanking

D.may develop lower IQs than their peer

66.Which of the followin g statements is TRUE according to the article?

A.40 percent of children grow up without ever being spanked

B.Children who suffer less physical punishment are better students

C.Occasional open-handed spanking on the bottom are mentally harmful

D.Researchers disagree over whether smacking is mentally harmful to children

67.The author seems to agree that _ _____.

A.parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or not

B.children who have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven't

C.good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable way

D.physical punishment should be the last resort of any parent

Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899—July 2, 1961)was an American writer and journalist. His writing style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image(形象)affected later generations.Hemingway produced most of his works between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

Hemingway was raised in Illinois. After high school he reported for The Kansas City Star, before leaving for the Italian fron t to enlist with the World War I ambulance drivers. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home.In 1922, he married Hadley Richardson. The couple moved to Paris, where he worked as a foreign journalist.Advised and encouraged by other American writers in Paris—F.Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, he began to see his work appear in print there, and in 1925 his first important book, a collection of stories called In Our Time, was published.A year later, he published The Sun Also Rises, a novel with which he scored his first solid success.

The writing of books occupied Hemingway for most of the postwar years. He remained based in Paris, but he traveled widely for bullfighting(斗牛), fishing, and hunting that by then had become part of his life and formed the background for much of his writing.Hemingway’s love of Spain and bullfighting resulted in Death in the Afternoon (1932).His position as a master of short fiction had been advanced by Men Without Women in 1927.The harvest of Hemingway’s considerable experience of Spain in war and peace was the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940).In the public view, however, the novel A Farewell to Arms (1929)overshadowed such works.

Shortly after he published The Old Man and the Sea in 1952, Hemingway went to Africa, where he was almost killed in a plane crash that left him in pain or ill-health for much of the rest of his life.Hemingway lived in Florida and Cuba during the 1930s and 1940s, but in 1959 he moved from Cuba to Ketchum, Idaho, where ended his life in the summer of 1961.68.Which best arranges Hemingway’s works in the correct order of time?

D.was believed to be among the worst works of Hemingway’s

70.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Hemingway must have spent his childhood in Italy.

B.Hemingway was an energetic writer with a wide interest.

C.Hemingway’s first book In Our Time was published before 1925.

71.It can be concluded from the passage that .

A.Hemingway produced most of his works in Africa

B.Hemingway led a very happy life in his last few years

C.most of Hemingway’s works were based on his life experience

D.Hemingway’s writing style affected the life of later generations

Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come

naturally without your knowing how you do it.Thinking about drinking is the key to critical thinking(判断性思考).When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes.Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others.Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.

The word“critical”here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily

seen-beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.

Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.

Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today’s world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film.If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein.Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, “Please go slowly.I don’t understand things quickly.”

72.Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically, _______.

A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fast.B.we might be controlled by other people’s ideas.

C.we will follow the ideas of others naturally.D.we might be footed by other people’s ideas.

73.If you are a critical thinker, you will ________.

A.think deeply about different ideas B.trust the reports in the newspapers

C.take one view against another view D.criticize other people for their mistakes

74.In the last paragraph, “something new”suggests that ________.

A.the smarter you are, the faster you do things B.the faster you do things, the smarter you become C.speed can improve intelligence D.intelligence is not decided by speed

75.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Thinking and Critical Thinking.B.Understanding Critical Thinking.

C.Thinking Is Natural and Human.D.Thinking Fast Means Intelligence.

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
