第三部分阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Traffic jam and cities, it seems, go hand in hand. Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic; but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportation planners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve traffic jam.

But is traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product of successful cities, and view the “traffic problem” in a different light.

Cities exist because they promote social interactions and economic transactions.

Traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited spaces. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don’t have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America’s most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses (经纪行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your firm needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.

Despite traffic jam, a larger number and wider variety of social interactions and economic transactions can be made perfect in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, traffic jam is an unfortunate consequence of prosperity, not a cause of economic decline and urban decay.

So while we can consider traffic jam as increasing costs on the areas of big cities, the costs of inaccessibility (交通不便) in uncrowded places are almost certainly greater.

There is no doubt that traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That’s why, for now, we don’t see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like California, and Illinois.

56. We can conclude from the first paragraph that_______.

A. traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of the big city

B. traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal with

C. if traffic engineers try their best, traffic jam can be solved

D. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power

57. According to the passage, what’s the author’s opinion towards traffic jam?

A. Traffic jam is unavoidable in any cities.

B. Traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success.

C. Traffic jam is one of the consequences of successful cities.

D. Traffic jam is a cause of economic decline.

58. By saying “decaying” (in Para. 4), the writer probably means_______.

A. declining

B. developing

C. rich and successful

D. strong and healthy

59. According to this article, which statement about “New York” and “Los Angeles” is true?

A. The traffic jam in the two cities has been worsened.

B. New York and Los Angeles are the least successful cities in the US.

C. It is easier to reach major brokerage houses in the two cities than in other cities.

For 19 years, the owl researcher, Denver Holt, has journeyed to Barrow, Alaska, each summer to map out the relationship between lemmings (旅鼠)that crawl across the tundra (冻原)and snowy owls that hunt them from above.

As he prepares for his 20th field season in the Arctic, he says that the snowy owl has a role to play in understanding ecological changes in one of the fastest changing places in the world."When lemmings are doing well, everything is doing well," Mr.Holt said."If climate change results in habitat (栖息地)changes and it affects the lemmings, it will show up in the snowy owls because 90 percent of their diet is lemmings. The owls are the key to everything else."

Twenty years of data provides an unusually deep look at the animal's population trends. And more research on snowy owls in other parts of the world—they are found throughout the Arctic—could flag changes in the global arctic ecosystem without the need for any other markers.

"It's a believable point," ..said John W.Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab of Ecology at Cornell University."Systems are difficult, and if we have an easily accessible marker for the system beneath it, that's a really good thing, because we can measure cheaply and easily how an ecosystem is doing. It gives us a quick understanding of the situation."

There is an unscientific reason to study the snowy owl as well, Mr.Holt says. There is something interesting about owls."People pay attention to owls more than other birds because they look like us," he said."They have a symmetrical (对称的)face, eyes facing forward, a round, flat face and a round head with feathers that look like hair."

64.From the passage, we know that lemmings ____.

A.live mostly on snowy owls B.often change their habitat

C.are increasing rapidly these days D.can affect the life of snowy owls 65.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Mr.Holt goes to the Arctic to study snowy owls every winter.

B.Climate change has a direct influence on snowy owls.

C.John W.Fitzpatrick thought Mr.Holt's research and findings were useful and meaningful.D.People study snowy owls just for scientific research.

66.The underlined word, "flag", in the passage is closest in meaning to "____".

A.influence B.mark C.measure D.cause

67.What is the best title for this passage?

Lucky is the man who has no “skeleton in his closet.” When a man has done something in his life that he is ashamed of, that he wants to hide, he is said to have a “skeleton in his closet.” Some people may have more than one skeleton.

As we have noted many times, it is hard to find out how these expressions begin. Sometimes, we get some hard facts. But more often we have to depend on guesswork. And that is true of this phrase, which came from England.

Before 1832, English law did not permit a doctor to cut open a dead human body for scientific examination, unless it was the corpse(尸体) of an executed(处决) criminal.

But when it became legal, more and more doctors demanded skeletons for a more scientific study of medicine. It was helping in the advance of modern medicine. The demand had become so strong that men began to rob tombs and sell skeletons to doctors at high prices.

We are told that a doctor would usually buy just one skeleton for scientific study. It became very important in his work. But he had to keep it hidden because most people objected to keeping such a thing. As a rule, the doctor keep his skeleton in some dark corner where it could not be seen, or hide it in a closet.

After a time, people began to suspect every doctor of hiding a skeleton in the closet. From this suspicion, the phrase “a skeleton in the closet”took on a broader, more general meaning: to describe anything that a man wanted to keep others from discovering. It could be proof of a criminal act, or something much less serious. Well, that is one theory.

One writer, however, believes that the phrase might have come from something that really happened. It is his guess that a hidden closet in some old English country home may have turned up a real skeleton, clear proof of some old family shame or crime. Well, one man's guess is as good as another. But this sounds like a story by the great French novelist, Balzac.

Balzac tells us of a man who suspected his wife of having a lover. The husband comes home by surprise. But she hears him and quickly hides her lover in the closet of her bedroom. He enters her room and asks her if she is hiding her lover. He says he will not open the door to the closet if she promises him there is no one there; He will believe her. She answers firmly that she is not hiding anyone in the closet.

The husband then begins to build a solid brick wall against the closet. His wife watches, knowing that her lover will never come out alive. But she will not change her story and admit her guilt.

Summer camps are good for children, besides the fun and excitement that they offer.Spending even part of the day at a camp can help children meet more people in society. Not only will they be likely to see some of their old friends, they will also have the opportunity to build new relationships.

Sometimes it seems impossible to keep children away from the television, computer or video games. However, camps such as sports camps can be a great alternative to technological entertainment and help to keep children active while they are out of school.

There are several programs that can help children keep their minds in learning mode while still having fun, such as science camps.Attending such programs can often improve retention (记忆力)rates for children so that they are better prepared for the school year to come.

Teamwork is also a common theme found in these programs. The programs can help to improve children's teamwork skills while also allowing them to experience healthy competition.Problem-solving skills are also another aspect of camps that many people may not realize. In many cases, camp hosts encourage children to work as a group to solve problems and produce ideas and solutions that they think are best. This gives children a chance to not only practice reasoning skills, but also allows them to work with others, which can be a valuable experience.第五部分书面表达(满分25分)

Dear editor,

Recently our class have had a heated discussion on how middle school students should make friends.

As we all know, good interpersonal relationship plays an important role in building a harmonious society.

Many people suggest that they should make friends who are of great benefit to their studies, so they will help each other and make greater progress with their studies. Some believe that they should have friends related to their life. Whenever they have difficulty dealing with problems in terms of life, they can help rid themselves of the problems. In addition, others agree that they should have some friends who can listen to them attentively and share their bitterness and joy.

What I want to stress is that each of us should have a true friend. To make friends, we should try to remember the names of the people we contact and learn not to judge people by their appearances. Besides, we need to be friendly and care about them. When disagreement does occur, it’s wise of us to talk it over to others. In brief, making true friends can really enable us to improve ourselves.

Yours ever,

Li Hua

A China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks.Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide. Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home. My first ride home was orderly. To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck. I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive. 21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today? A.Because they are traditional and safe. B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive. C.Because they are colorful and available. D.Because they are fast and environment friendly. 22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________. A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport C.to experience local culture D.to improve his riding skills 23.How did the author feel about his street crossing? A.It was boring. B.It was difficult. C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful. 24. Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience? A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills. B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding. C.The author was praised by the other bikers. D.The author took great pleasure in biking. B A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative.
