61. ______We pay more attention to what we want to hear. (Bad news travels fast. / Bad news has wings.)

62. ______Know which way the wind blows. (People act according to their interests.)

63. ______No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted. (An act of kindness is never wasted. / Even the weak have something to offer the strong.)

64. _____A man is known by the company he keeps. (You are known by the company you keep.)

65. _____Do not attempt too much at once.

A. A dog used to run up quietly to the heels of everyone he met, and to bite them without notice. His master put a bell about his neck so that the dog might give notice of his presence wherever he went. Thinking it a mark of distinction, the dog grew proud of his bell and went tinkling it all over the market-place. One day an old dog said to him, “Why do you make such an exhibition of yourself? That bell that you carry is not, believe me, any order of merit, but on the contrary a public notice to all men to avoid you as a bad-mannered dog.”

B. A man once stood up at a market-place in the east and said, “I have been ordered by the king to collect all the well-born and well-bred and bring them before him, since he wishes to reward them.” Everybody that heard him joined him, and he went towards the palace, surrounded by the whole town. Then he suddenly turned round and said, “The king has just sent me word that he means to help only those that have been il l-born and ill-bred to make up for their misfortunes.” The crowd lingered behind for a while, and then one after another joined the man as ill-born and ill-bred to receive the king’s gifts. The man said, “The world goes as the wind blows!”

C. A lion was awakened by a mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily, the lion caught the mouse and was about to kill him, when the mouse begged, “If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness.” The lion laughed at the idea of the mouse bei ng able to repay a favor, but let him go in the end. Later, the lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him with strong ropes to the ground. The mouse, recognizing the lion’s roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him free.

D. A fox had long been the dread of the village poultry yard. One day, he was found lying breathless in a field. The report went abroad that, after all, he had been caught and killed by someone. In a moment, everybody in the village came out to see the dead fox. The village cock, with all his hens and chicks, was also there, to enjoy the sight. The fox then got up and said, “I ate a number of hens and chicks last night. So I must have slept longer than usual.” The cock counted his hens and chicks, and found several chick s were missing. “Alas!” said he, “how is it that I do not

know of it?” “My dear sir,” said the fox, as he ran back to the wood, “it was last night that I had a good meal of your hens and chicks, yet you did not know of it. A moment ago they found me lying in the field, and you knew of it at once.”

E. A boy put his hand into a pitcher (大罐) full of nuts. He grasped as many as he could possibly hold, but when he tried to pull out his hand, he was prevented from doing so by the neck of the pitcher. Unwilling to lose his nuts, and yet unable to withdraw his hand, he burst into tears, crying with disappointment. A person who was passing by said to him, “Be satisfied with half the quantity and you will draw out your hand at once.”

F. A man wished to purchase an ass (a donkey), and decided to give the animal a test before buying him. He took the ass home and put him in the field with his other asses. The new ass moved away from the others to join the one that was the laziest and the biggest eater of them all. Seeing this, the man led him back to his owner. When the owner asked how he could have t ested the ass in such a short time, the man answered, “I didn’t even need to see how he worked. I knew he would be just like the one he chose to be his friend.”

A. Arguments are pointless.

B. Your parents only want what's best for you.

C. Everyone's opinion matters only as much as you want them to.

D. You learn by doing.

E. Your emotions are under your control.

F. You aren't stuck in any situation.

Life is the greatest teacher

There always comes a moment when I wonder where I will end up and this moment always serves as a strong motivation for me to learn life lesson. I've learned a great many things, but these are the lessons that I wish I'd learned earlier:

61. _________

There was a time when everyone's opinion was mine as well. Whatever preferences I formerly held were dashed in the face of another's. This most likely came from a need to please others.Remember that your opinion matters just as much as the next guy's, whether they make more money than you or are less popular than you. Everyone's opinion holds the same weight.

62. _________

Drama, chaos, and emotional unrest — these were what took up most of my time as a teenager. If I had heard someone said bad things behind my back, I'd be angry. Go crazy. Looking back on those tantrums now, I'm not too surprised. After all, when you have little self control, anything is possible. The lessons here is, remain aware of how you react.

63. _________

Will one small quarrel among friends decide the fate of the entire universe? In my world it felt like it. I just wanted so much to be right and for them so much to be wrong. But in the end, it only resulted in me wasting my time and in the other person storming off in frustration. Is there really a point to arguing? Unless it's absolutely necessary, I've learned that it's better to hold your breath on things you can't control at all.Arguing to change someone's mind is one of them.

64. _________

I'm not saying every parent wants what's best for you (there are outliers), but in general, parents do what they do for you in your best interest. My parents used to make me do the dishes, cook dinner, sweep the floors, mow the lawn, take out the garbage… the list goes on and on. And at every turn, I'd whine and complain. I'd eventually end up doing it.Now, I honestly see the value in having learned those skills. I can efficiently cook and clean up after myself.

65. _________

Whenever I’d lose a friend, get an awful grade, or disappoint my parents, I stewed in my own muck. Waiting for the bad moments to go away seemed to be the only solution. Fortunately, I know now that you don’t have to be stuck in bad situations. You can go out and create better ones.It all depends on perspective; on how you see the situation. Viewing everything as a learning experience makes life more pleasurable, even during the hard times. You aren't stuck. You can move on.

I'm glad to have learned these lessons the way I did. Each experience helped shape me to become a better person. I don't know if any young people are reading this, but if they are, I'd like to say this:"Listen to life and its experiences. Everyone goes through mostly the same things."

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

61.________________________________

The colored part of the eye is called the iris. There are three basic eye colours ─brown, blue and green. A few albino people have red or pink eyes, but these are very rare. Many people believe that blue eyes are more delicate than brown eyes. In fact they are just as tough as brown eyes, although they are more sensitive to light.

62._______________________________

We only see part of the eyeball, although the whole eye is as big as a table tennis ball. Light enters the eye through the pupil and passes through the lens. The lens focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The retina sends the signal to the brain along the optic nerve. The image on the retina is actually upside-down, but the brain corrects it. As we get older our eyesight becomes worse. This happens because the lens isn’t as flexible as when we are young and the eye muscles are weaker.

63._____ __________________________

Our eyes are the most important of our five senses. We receive 80% of our information about the world through our eyes. We also send signals to other people with our eyes. Some eye signals are unconscious. When we look at something nice, our pupils get bigger. But when we don’t like something, they become smaller. We cry when we are unhappy and sometimes when we are very happy. But we can also control some eye signals. For example, we can wink at someone or raise an eyebrow. Sunglasses make someone appear mysterious or dangerous, because they hide that eyes and so we can’t see the signals.

64.______________________________

We find large eyes more attractive. Children have large eyes in proportion to their heads. Cartoon characters always have large eyes, too. We can’t actually change our eyes, but we can make them look bigger with make-up. Eye make-up isn’t new. Pictures in the Pyramids show that the ancient Egyptians both men and women-used it. False eyelashes can make eyelashes longer. Eye shadow on the eyelids can make the eyes look bigger and more dramatic.Glasses can also make eyes look bigger.

65._____________________________ _

We do not normally look into someone’s eyes for long, especially when they are very close. Eye contact can be very threatening, so people only do it when they want to threaten someone. It is also very intimate. This is why lovers gaze into each other’s eyes. It’s also why people don’t look at each other in lifts.

A. Ways to beautify eyes

B. Proper use of eye contact

C. Techniques of sending eye signals

D. Colours of people’s eyes

E. Functions of different parts of the eye

F. Variety of messages conveyed through

Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2. Passage 1 Paper —More than Meets the Eye A) We are surrounded by so much paper and card that it is easy to forget just how complex it is. There are many varieties and grades of paper materials, and whilst it is fairly easy to spot the varieties, it is far more difficult to spot the grades. B) It needs to be understood that most paper and card is manufactured for a specific purpose, so that whilst the corn-flake packet may look smart, it is clearly not something destined for the archives. It is made to look good, but only needs a limited life span. It is also much cheaper to manufacture than high grade card. C) Paper can be made from an almost endless variety of cellulose(纤维素化合物)-based material which will include many woods, cottons and grasses of which papyrus is an example and from where we get the word "paper". Many of these are very specialized, but the preponderance of paper making has been from soft wood and cotton or rags, with the bulk being wood-based. Paper from Wood D) In order to make wood into paper it needs to be broken down into fine strands. Firstly by powerful machinery and then boiled with strong alkalies(碱) such as caustic soda, until a fine pulp of cellulose fibers is produced. It is from this pulp that the final product is made, relying on the bonding together of the cellulose into layers. That, in a very small nutshell, is the essence of paper making from wood. However, the reality is rather more complicated. In order to give us our white paper and card, the makers will add bleach and other materials such as china clay and additional chemicals. E) A further problem with wood is that it contains a material that is not cellulose. Something called lignin. This is essential for the tree since it holds the cellulose fibres together, but if it is incorporated into the manufactured paper it presents archivists with a problem. Lignin eventually breaks down and releases acid products into the paper. This will weaken the bond between the cellulose fibers and the paper will become brittle and look rather brown and careworn. We have all seen this in old newspapers and cheap paperback books. It has been estimated that most paperback books will have a life of no greater than fifty years, not what we need for our archives. F) Since the lignin can be removed from the paper pulp during manufacture, the obvious question is "why is it left in the paper". The answer lies in the fact that lignin makes up a considerable part of the tree. By leaving the lignin in the pulp a papermaker can increase his paper yield from a tree to some 95%. Removing it means a yield of only 35%. It is clearly uneconomic to remove the lignin for many paper and card applications. It also means, of course, that lignin-free paper is going to be more expensive. G) However, it is nevertheless what the archivist must look for in his supplies. There is no point whatsoever in carefully placing our valuable artifacts in paper or card that is going to hasten their demise. Acid is particularly harmful to photographic materials, causing them to fade and in some cases simply vanish! H) So, how do we tell a piece of suitable paper or card from one that is unsuitable? You cannot do it by simply looking, and rather disappointingly, you cannot always rely on the label. "Acid-free" might be true inasmuch as a test on the paper may indicate that it is a neutral material at this time. But lignin can take years before it starts the inevitable process of breaking down, and in the right conditions it will speed up enormously. I) Added to this, as I have indicated earlier, paper may also contain other materials added during manufacture such as bleach, china clay, chemical whiteners and size. This looks like a bleak picture, and it would be but for the fact that there are suppliers who will guarantee the material that they sell. If you want to be absolutely sure that you are storing in, or printing on, the correct material then this is probably the only way. J) Incidentally, acids can migrate from material to material. Lining old shoe boxes with good quality acid-free paper will do little to guard the contents. The acid will get there in the end. Paper from Rag K) Paper is also commonly made from cotton and rag waste. This has the advantage of being lignin-free, but because there is much less cotton and rag than trees, it also tends to be much more expensive than wood pulp paper. You will still need to purchase from a reliable source though, since even rag paper and card can contain undesirable additives. L) A reliable source for quality rag papers is a recognized art stockiest. Many water color artists insist on using only

CAL-FENGHAI-(2020YEAR-YICAI)_JINGBIAN

5w1h(who, what, when, where, which, how)等因素来进行锁定。
