Confucius was born in today's Qufu in Shandong Province in 551 BC.His family was far from being well to-do.But he was a hard-working pupil even in his childhood. When the young man of a little over twenty,he became a small official of the state.Since he was very knowledgeable and serious in work,he had become quite well-known by the time he turned thirty.Confucius had been to many of the states of the time, trying to make his political views accepted by the rulers in running their states. But they turned_a_deaf_ear_to his views and opinions. As a result,Confucius made up his mind to devote all his energies to education. When people learned about this, many of them sent their children to him to be educated. They were accepted one and all and so Confucius became the first man in the history of Chinese education to start a private school.

Yan Hui,a young man of humble origin, wanted to be accepted as

Confucius's student. But the family was so poor that they even had

difficulty providing themselves with daily necessities. He was afraid he

would be rejected as he could not afford the tuition. One day he came to

where Confucius was giving lectures and overheard Confucius say,“I'm

ready to accept anyone that can bring 10 pieces of preserved meat for

tuition, whatever his origin.”Greatly heartened by this,Yan Hui hurried back home and told his friends Zi Lu and Zi Gong about it.A few days later, all three became Confucius's students.

Confucius was a dedicated educator, having accepted a total of 3,000 students in his life,of whom 72 were outstanding scholars.Through educational work,Confucius succeeded in spreading his political views, which eventually became an independent school of thought and had a great impact on China for thousands of years.

21.Confucius had become very famous by the time he turned thirty because________.

A.he had rich knowledge and took his work seriously

B.he was a hard-working pupil when he was young

C.many people in the government knew him well

D.his political view had been widely accepted

Since he was very knowledgeable and serious in work,he had become quite well-known by the time he turned thirty.

22.The underlined phrase“turned a deaf ear to”in the first paragraph probably means“________”.

A.refused to listen to someone

B.were willing to accept something

C.gave away something important to others

D.made someone's ear deaf

根据第一段第六句...trying to make his political views accepted by the rulers in running their states.

23.From the last part of the first paragraph,we can learn that________.

A.nobody hoped to send their children to school then

B.Confucius was the first person to start education for all in China

C.Confucius was happy to work in the government

D.Confucius started his school with the help of the government

根据文章第一段最后一句...so Confucius became the first man in the history of Chinese education to start a private school.

24.The second paragraph in the passage is used to be an example to suggest________.

A.Yan Hui's family was too poor to afford his education

B.the education Confucius provided was for all children

C.Confucius liked to eat preserved meat

D.Yan Hui was a young man with ambition

They were accepted one and all。

B

While running for president,Barack Obama often talked about his mother,Ann Dunham, and the lessons she taught him through her work with poor rural communities around the world.Dunham

died of cancer in 1995,before any of her grandchildren were born.

Now Barack Obama's sister,Maya Soetoro-Ng,has written Ladder to the Moon,a children's book that attempts to connect her young daughter,Suhaila, with the grandmother she never knew.

The book's title was inspired hy a picture postcard Dunham gave Maya as a child. It features a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, which depicts a ladder floating against the night sky, with a half-moon high above it.

In the book, little Suhaila asks her mother what her grandmother was like.“Like the moon,”her mother replies.“Full, soft and curious.”Suhaila longs to meet her,and one night, her wish comes true.A golden ladder appears at her window and Grandma Annie invites the girl to come along on a magical journey.

“The book is about an evening spent helping others to come up to the moon after natural disasters and religious conflicts,”says Soetoror-Ng.“And the moon becomes an imagined place to heal and rest until we laugh loudly again.”

It seemed natural for Soetoro-Ng to connect her daughter with Grandma Annie through the moon. Her mother, she says, always loved the moon because it was the same for everybody,no matter where in the world they were.Under the glow of the moon, she recalls, her mother shared her most meaningful tales with her children.

That's how Soetoro-Ng says she,her brother and President Obama, remember their mother—as a great story teller and role model.

“Like me,he feels that she's someone who gave us a strong moral compass, and that she gave us compassion and desire to recognize the things that are common to all humanity and reach out across the divides even when doing so is hard,”she says.“That's something extremely valuable.”

It wasn't just her mother's tales that shaped who she and her brother have become.Soetoro-Ng says what parents do is more important than what they say.Dunham, who had a PhD in anthropology, worked in rural development in some of the poorest places in the world.

25.By writing Ladder to the Moon,Maya intends to________.

A.show her mother's strong influence

B.express her mother's love

C.stress the importance of good parenting

D.let her daughter know about her grandmother

26.The underlined word“depicts”in Paragraph 3 probably means“________”.

A.tells B.shows

C.resembles D.represents

27.Maya connects her mother with the moon because________.

A.her mother resembled the moon in some way

B.her mother was just as beautiful as the moon

C.she loved reading with her mother under the moon

D.she used to work with her mother in the open air

28.The passage is intended to________.

A.describe the family life of Maya Soetoro-Ng

B.recall the hard life Barack Obama lived

C.introduce a new book by Barack Obama's sister

D.share some stories about Barack Obama's mother

C

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it.Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in.But others are determined to wait until the last moment.

By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened.A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation(诱惑)early on were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated(沮丧)and inflexible(固守己见的).Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn't show up in an IQ test.

The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists' concerns. But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant soul.

Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence:when it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as“character”.

EQ is not the opposite of IQ.What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work

together;how one's ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use.Among the ingredients(要素)for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%;the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.

While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.

29.The experiment with the four-year olds makes it clear that________.

A.the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment

B.emotional intelligence won't show up until adolescence

C.the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success

D.candy can be used to measure a person's emotional intelligence

30.Which of the following is true about EQ and IQ according to the text?

A.The higher a person's EQ is,the higher his or her IQ is.

B.The higher a person's IQ is,the higher his or her EQ is.

C.Some people can be blessed with lots of both, but some with little of either.

D.Scientists have already discovered the way in which EQ and IQ work together.

31.The underlined word“upbeat”in Paragraph 4 probably means________.

A.kind B.floating

C.excited D.optimistic

32.Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?

A.To amuse both the children and readers.

B.To prove the scientist's wisdom.

C.To introduce the topic of the text.

D.To show us how to do an IQ test.

D

Einstein Albert,Germanborn American physicist and Nobel Prize winner,best-known as the creator of the special and general theories of relativity and for his bold hypothesis concerning the particle nature of light. He is perhaps the most wellknown scientist of the 20th century.

Einstein was born in Ulm on March 14,1879,and spent his youth in

Munich, where his family owned a small shop that manufactured

electric machinery. He did not talk until the age of three, but even as a youth he showed a brilliant curiosity about nature and ability to understand difficult mathematical concepts. At the age of 12 he taught himself geometry.

Einstein hated the dull rules and unimaginative spirit of school in Munich. When repeated business failure led the family to leave Germany for Milan,Italy,Einstein, who was then 15 years old, used the opportunity to withdraw from the school. He spent a year with his parents in Milan, and when it became clear that he would have to make his own way in the world,he finished secondary school in Arrut,Switzerland, and entered the Swiss National Polytechnic in Zurich.Einstein did not enjoy the methods of instruction there. He often cut classes and used the time to study physics on his own or to play his beloved violin. He passed his examinations and graduated in 1900 by studying the notes of a classmate. His professors did not think highly of him and would not recommend him for a university position.

For two years Einstein worked as tutor and substitute teacher. In 1902,he got a position as an examiner in the Swiss patent office in Bern.In 1903 he married Mileva Maric, who had been his classmate at the polytechnic. They had two sons but finally divorced.Einstein later remarried.

C.He hated unimaginative spirit.

D.He taught himself geometry.

There was no one quite like my father. When any other man had an extra dollar, he bought a drink; when Father had an extra dollar, he bought a book. Other people had pictures on their walls, or at least a calendar; we had books, 3,000 of them,__61__(line) every surface of our little

four-room house__62__every subject. Father was the__63__(much) persistent (固执的) scholar I ever knew. Every summer he took a month or so off to attend classes. Eventually, he earned seven degrees, attended 11 different colleges and universities. My sister and I were the immediate beneficiaries of Father's insatiable (不能满足的)__64__(hungry) to learn.

Before I was three, my father was reading aloud to me. Thereafter, I read aloud to him so he'd work on my__65__(pronounce). By the time I was in the fifth grade, I'd recite__66__classical literature to poetry and had to be prepared to do__67__. Then Father would warn me by quoting a saying from Shakespeare,“__68__all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious (乏味的) as to work.” Obviously, his efforts weren't entirely__69__vain, for my voice has enabled me to earn a fair livelihood. But that fact doesn't begin to define the enormous debt__70__I owe my father.

61.______ 62.______ 63.______ 64.______ 65.______

66.______ 67.______ 68.______ 69.______ 70.______

work on“从事,致力于”。

from...to...“从……到……”。

67.so此处so是代词,代替背诵古代文学和诗歌等等。

68.If如果全年都是假期的话,那么运动也和工作一样乏味。

69.in从上文可以知道父亲从“我”小时候起就对“我”进行艰苦的训练,而“我”也取得了一定的成绩,故父亲的努力没有白费。in vain“徒劳地”。

70.that I owe my father是定语从句,修饰debt,从句中缺少宾语。

Ann:Hi,Kate! Every time I see you you've got your head stuck in a book.

Kate:I'm reading a book about a European poet. This one is about Goethe,__61__was German.

Ann:He wasn't just a poet. He was also a playwright, novelist and natural philosopher. I think his most famous work was the philosophy drama Faust,__62__was written in 1800.

Kate:It took him a long time to write that one. He began in his twenties, and didn't

Ann:He died in 1832,didn't he?

Kate:Yes. And he ordered Faust__64__(publish) after his death.

Ann:That's why it was__65__masterpiece then. His lessons were informal,__66__(teach)by his father, who was an imperial councilor, and tutors.

Kate: He must have some special talent. He can speak several__67__such as Latin, Greek, French and Italian.

Ann:So he was multilingual(能使用多种语言).__68__he was 16,he went to university to study law, because his father wanted him to. But I think in his heart, he would rather__69__something like literature.

Kate:Me too. That's__70__when he was in university he started to write poems and lyrics.

Ann:Yeah, he is one of the greatest writers in Germany.

61.______ 62.______ 63.______ 64.______ 65.______

66.______ 67.______ 68.______ 69.______ 70.______

63.until/till考查介词。

64.to be published考查非谓语动词。order的用法为:order sb to do sth和order sth to be done。

There are 30 boys in this house and Anne Belles is their mom. Belles has wanted to help children since she was a kid. “I was intrigued by the movie Oliver! in the 1960s, a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I told my mom, …That?s what I want to do. …” Anne?s boys are from 3 to 25 years old. All of them are challenged in some way. “They each have special needs — physically, mentally (精神上), or at school,” says Belles. Every day, a small army of childcare workers, nurses, and volunteers comes in to help cook and clean, wash 30 loads of laundry a day, and take care of health needs. To find out how much such a large family costs, we followed Jim Silcock to the grocery store. He spent $880 on food for one week. Every month they spend $2,000 to run five cars, $15,000 for the fourteen paid helpers, and more than $10,000 on medical costs. The family receives $26,000 a month from the state government, and makes some money from a family business. All the money is spent on the children; having new clothes and fancy cars isn?t important to Belles. How do the kids feel? 17-year-old Anthony says, “The family is there whenever I need something ... I feel like I am loved.” “Everything I?m doing now is what I wanted to happen in my life,” says Anne Belles. “So, no regrets; this is perfect. I couldn?t ask for it to be better — maybe a bigger house, you know, would be nice.” 21. The underlined word “intrigued” in the first paragraph means “_____”. A. fooled B. attracted C. frightened D. disappointed 22. The boys Anne has raised _____. A. are all ready to accept a challenge B. all like Oliver Twist C. all have disabilities

Comments(评论): I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fun movie for the whole family. I had really good laughs and enjoyed being there. –James I went to see this film today with my 8-year-old daughter, really without knowing too much about it. My daughter and I were pleasantly surprised at how funny it was. We just couldn't help laughing. I would recommend this film to the whole family. –Mary I have seen several movies of this kind, like Antz or Bugs Life, but this one blows them both away as having greater movie qualities. The film is so well made-some of the scenes are unbelievably beautiful.

A Sundays, I walk to the supermarket. Mother hands me the grocery list and puts money in my pocket, hoping it will be enough. She's had a hard day, and I've had a hard week. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when I get to the store. I grab the bread, some milk, and other things on the list. As I turn to head out, I see a beautiful dress in the window. I turn away, bitter that I could never own such a dress. Outside, I cannot stop thinking about that pretty dress. It's not fair that I can never have what I want. I work so hard to help my family and yet I get nothing in return, just another list to do. In my anger, I fail to realize the apples are rolling across the road. Suddenly, I see a pair of hands, offering me an apple. Looking up, I see the tanned (晒黑的) face of this stranger. His clothes are mismatched, borrowed or stolen. But his eyes are soft and kind. “Thanks,” I say. No other words are spok en as he continues to help me. I tell him “thank you” one more time and am on my way because I have many other things to finish. Suddenly, he says, “Have a good day, ma'am.” And then he gives me the biggest smile I have ever seen. Right then, he looks years younger — and I feel a fool.
