A teenager and his family have been praised as heroes after rescuing five children from a fire. Mathew Robinson, 18, his mother and his father rushed to help when a neighbor’s home went up in flames. Last night, fire fighters said one or more of the children would almost certainly have died had it not been for the Robinsons. However, Matthew denied they were heroes. He said, “Anyone would have done the same thing. I was in the right place at the right time.”

The fire at the home in Dorset, began around 9:30 p.m. On Sunday night. The Robinsons heard the children’s mother screaming “Get them out”. Matthew rushed through the front door, but was beaten back by flames. After his parents helped three of the children down the ladder, he climbed into the bedroom to get the others.

“Being in the room full o f smoke, it was impossible to see anything. I had to feel my way round the room, trying to find the two kids and get them to make some noise, so I could find out where they were,” he said. “The boys were in a pretty bad state, and almost passed out. They were unable to say anything.”

Steve Isaac, station manager at Weymouth Community Fire Station, said, “There was some very, very quick thinking on the part of Matthew and his father Jackie. They showed great bravery and helped save some lives. Normally we would never encourage people to go into a burning building but, on this occasion, it all worked out well.”

They have no brains and no spines (脊椎). You can often see right through them. But they can cause painful, sometimes deadly stings (刺伤). Some can even glow in the dark! Scientists know them as medusas, but most people call them jellyfish.

Jellyfish are not really fish. Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for sensing the world around them. They are made almost entirely of water, which is why you can look through them. Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are found in oceans and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and in ice waters near the North and South Poles.

Adult jellyfish are shaped like an open umbrella or a bell. A Jellyfish has tentacles (触须) at the edges of its body. At the center of a jellyfish’s body, where it is widest, is the mouth. The ends of the tentacles have sting cells on them, which jellyfish use to catch their prey (猎物). Some jellyfish have powerful stings that can kill people.

Most jellyfish eat fish, tiny creatures and even other jellyfish. Once a jellyfish stings and catches its prey, it takes the prey to its mouth and swallows it.

Some jellyfish are very small, no longer than a marble (弹子). Others are quite large. The largest jellyfish can grow to about 7 feet (about 2 meters) across and weight hundreds of pounds! Jellyfish may be blue, orange, pink, yellow, purple, and other colors.

Some jellyfish can glow in the dark by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists belie ve jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may glow to attract animals they prey on.

Science can’t explain the powe r of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.

Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Ka ren Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people — half of them pet owners — while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松)around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.

A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall — mostly with their dogs —and found it worth doing.

Every year in America, high-school students who want to go on to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one’s mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question to be answered in an essay, handwritten on the spot. That’s an interesting way to test writing ability, but content aside, have you ever seen young peop le’s handwriting lately? Or anyone’s for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word.

Yet today’s kids are ask ed to write, thoughtfully and clearly, for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl(潦草的笔迹) of young people who’ve been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one’s score

on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. And don’t forget, we all have to use handwriting from time to time, as computers go down when the power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve your handwriting.

Position the pen, you should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb. You should then rest it near the first knuckle(指节) of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled(卷曲)under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. What do you like and what you don’t like about the way you write? Make changes to your letters till you like how they look.

Take your time. Make sure that, while you are writing, you take your time. Speed is sure to make your writing messy-looking. If it is worth writing well, then take your time.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it’s not enough to do it once and h ope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.
