Are the British people Europeans? This may seem a strange question to Africans and Asians, who tend to think of all white men as Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain,do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans,to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English.Europe is “the Continent”:a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate island that has made its people feel very, very insular. They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them,or even to understand them,in time of need.

Where did the British people come from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe.Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B.C.,but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a dark-haired Mediterranean race called the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes:first the Gaels, whose descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language;and secondly the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers,so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the “barbarians”,i.e.the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.

A black schoolboy was bludgeoned (连击) to death with an ice axe for “no other reason than the color of his skin”,a court heard yesterday.

Anthony Walker,18,was attacked while walking with his white girlfriend Louise Thompson to a bus stop with his cousin,Marcus Binns.Michael Barton, the 17-year-old brother of Premiership footballer Joey Barton,is accused of murder and conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm to both Anthony and Marcus.Barton’s cousin Paul Taylor,20,admitted murdering Anthony,on Tuesday.

There were gasps in court when the 2ft (60cm) axe used in the attack was shown to the jury.On the night of the attack,Anthony and Marcus were racially abused by a man as they waited for a bus opposite the Huyton Park pub,the jury was told.Sensing trouble, they started to walk to the next bus stop as a man shouted,“Walk, nigger, walk,” prosecutor Neil Flewitt QC said.

They took a short cut through a park when they realized they were being followed by a car, allegedly containing Barton and Taylor, but were ambushed there,he said.He continued,“In McGoldrick Park,Paul Taylor,Michael Barton and others confronted Anthony and Marcus.”

“Although Marcus and Louise were able to run away and escape their attackers,Anthony was not so fortunate. He was struck to the head and killed by a single blow from an ice axe.It is the prosecution’s case that the fatal blow was struck by Paul Taylor, but that the weapon was provided by Michael Barton.”

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles old Harold.

What in the world,Harold wonders,do they have to talk about?

Betty shrugs.Talk?We’re friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men.No matter what their age, their job, their sex,the results were completely clear:women have more friendships than men,and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendship is “marked and unmistakable”.

More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman.Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman.More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person,or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress (感情危机).“Most women,”says Rubin,“identified (认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”

“In general,”writes Rubin in her new book,“women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part,Rubin says, interactions (交往) between men are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior”.

“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes,“the two share little about their innermost feelings.Whereas a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage,it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”

During the winter vacation,I took part in a tour around the world organised by the International Tourist Agency.I paid a visit to many famous and interesting cities in different countries with my friends, and I was much attracted by their beautiful scenery and wonderful cultural relics.

While traveling in Beijing,in the north of China,I was much impressed by its long history. What made me surprised most was the development of New York,a city in north-eastern America. Then I found the oldest buildings in the world when I came to the north-eastern part of Egypt to visit Cairo.Rich culture in London and beautiful art in Sydney also attracted my attention most while I traveled in southern Britain and south-eastern Australia.

I was totally absorbed in the wonderful world, and I wish I could visit them a second time one day in the future.

“Brazil has become one of the developing world’s great successes at reducing population growth but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce the birth rate,Brazil has had better result without really trying,”says George Martine at Harvard.

Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990,and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average.Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990,an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World

countries.

Martine puts it down to,among other things, soap operas (通俗电视连续剧) and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s.Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate.Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas.Colobo,Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

“Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction (生育),they describe middle and upper class values—not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,” says Martine.“They sent this message to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of family life and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”

Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers.“This led to an enormous change in consumption (消费) patterns and consumption was incompatible (不相容的) with unlimited reproduction,”says Martine.

A Walk into the California home of Anne Belles and her husband, Jim Silcock, and you?ll see kids everywhere playing video games, doing homework, and getting ready for dinner. There are 30 boys in this house and Anne Belles is their mom. Belles has wanted to help children since she was a kid. “I was intrigued by the movie Oliver! in the 1960s, a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. I told my mom, …That?s what I want to do. …” Anne?s boys are from 3 to 25 years old. All of them are challenged in some way. “They each have special needs — physically, mentally (精神上), or at school,” says Belles. Every day, a small army of childcare workers, nurses, and volunteers comes in to help cook and clean, wash 30 loads of laundry a day, and take care of health needs. To find out how much such a large family costs, we followed Jim Silcock to the grocery store. He spent $880 on food for one week. Every month they spend $2,000 to run five cars, $15,000 for the fourteen paid helpers, and more than $10,000 on medical costs. The family receives $26,000 a month from the state government, and makes some money from a family business. All the money is spent on the children; having new clothes and fancy cars isn?t important to Belles. How do the kids feel? 17-year-old Anthony says, “The family is there whenever I need something ... I feel like I am loved.” “Everything I?m doing now is what I wanted to happen in my life,” says Anne Belles. “So, no regrets; this is perfect. I couldn?t ask for it to be better — maybe a bigger house, you know, would be nice.” 21. The underlined word “intrigued” in the first paragraph means “_____”. A. fooled B. attracted C. frightened D. disappointed 22. The boys Anne has raised _____. A. are all ready to accept a challenge B. all like Oliver Twist C. all have disabilities

My daughter and I were pleasantly surprised at how funny it was. We just couldn't help laughing. I would recommend this film to the whole family. –Mary I have seen several movies of this kind, like Antz or Bugs Life, but this one blows them both away as having greater movie qualities.

A Sundays, I walk to the supermarket. Mother hands me the grocery list and puts money in my pocket, hoping it will be enough. She's had a hard day, and I've had a hard week. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when I get to the store. I grab the bread, some milk, and other things on the list. As I turn to head out, I see a beautiful dress in the window. I turn away, bitter that I could never own such a dress. Outside, I cannot stop thinking about that pretty dress. It's not fair that I can never have what I want. I work so hard to help my family and yet I get nothing in return, just another list to do. In my anger, I fail to realize the apples are rolling across the road. Suddenly, I see a pair of hands, offering me an apple. Looking up, I see the tanned (晒黑的) face of this stranger. His clothes are mismatched, borrowed or stolen. But his eyes are soft and kind. “Thanks,” I say. No other words are spok en as he continues to help me. I tell him “thank you” one more time and am on my way because I have many other things to finish. Suddenly, he says, “Have a good day, ma'am.” And then he gives me the biggest smile I have ever seen. Right then, he looks years younger — and I feel a fool.
