Andrew Baker is the CEO(Chief Executive Officer) of Castle Computer Corporation, a successful computer company. He is well known in the computer field as a brilliant and creative executive, but he is also known as a disorganized and last minute-type person, perhaps because he is a procrastinator(拖延者). As a result, company employees are always in a state of confusion and instability, and deadlines for production schedules are almost never met. The fourth-quarter earning statement has just come out, and profits are way down.

Deborah Jackson, who has been Mr. Baker’s executive assistant for one year, recently attended a two-day time management workshop. She had hoped to discuss the comcepts of effective time management with Mr. Baker, but when she brought up the subject, he laughed and said time management was the least of his problems. He was working on a plan for test-marketing the new Castle laptop computer, which Marcia Lee, the Marketing and Sales Vice President, had asked him to revise. In addition, he was redesigning the new laser printer that the Research and Development Division had just developed, and solving a personnel problem that the Director of Human resources and Administration had brought to him.

Deborah knows that Mr. Baker, who has been with the company since its founding, likes to keep an eye on every department and stay in daily contact with all his division managers. However, she can see the results of Mr. Baker’s “micromanagement” style and poor time managem ent. In fact, she is considering asking for a meeting with the Chief Operating Officer of Castle Computer Corporation, Harry Webb, to voice her concerns about the future of the company under Mr. Baker’s leadership. Although Deborah has a great deal of respect for Mr. Baker, she is completely worn out from her daily struggle to keep him on schedule. If only Mr Baker would delegate some of his responsibilities and set priorities. In Deborah’s eyes, Caltle Computer Corporation is being under-led and overmanaged.

NASDAQ, acronym for the National Association of Securities Dealers automated Quotation system, is one of the largest markets in the world for the trading of stocks. The number of companies listed on NASDAQ is more than that on any of the other stock exchange in the United States, including the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMSE). The majority of companies listed on NASDAQ are smaller than most of those on the NYSE and AMEX. NASDAQ has become known as the home of new technology companies, particularly computer and computer-related businesses. Trading on NASDAQ is started by stock brokers(经纪人) acting on behalf of their clients. The brokers negotiate with market makers who concentrate on trading specific stocks to reach a price for the stock.

Unlike other stock exchange, NASDAQ has no central location where trading takes place. Instead, its market makers are located all over the country and make trades by telephone and via the Internet. Because brokers and market makers trade stocks directly instead of on the floor of a stock exchange, NASDAQ is called an over-the-counter market. The term over-the –counter refers to the direct nature of the trading, as in a store where goods are handed over a counter.

Since its inception(开市) in 1971, the NASDAQ Stock Market has been the innovator(创新者). As the world’s first electronic stock market, NASDAQ long ago set a precedent(先例) for technological trading innovation that is unrivaled. Now ready to become the world’s first truly glob al market, the NASDAQ Stock Market is the market of choice for business industry leaders worldwide. By providing an efficient environment for raising capital NASDAQ has helped thousands of companies achieve their desired growth and successfully make the leap into public ownership.

80.____________

For those of us who lead busy lives, it’s very tempting to take a short cut to looking good. Why bother to keep fit and have a balanced diet when you can look good the easy way? But before you decide that looking after yourself is all too much effort, think again.

81.___________

There’s nothing like a suntan to make you feel good. Spend all day doing nothing on a beautiful beach and you’ll look better at the end of it. A light tan will make you look younger and healthier, but there is increasing evidence that sunbathing and using sunbeds are directly linked to skin cancer. In the long run, it also ages the skin. If you want a tan, you may do beeter getting it out a bottle.

82.__________

If you want to change the color of your hair, why not just do it? A quick visit to the hairdresser can make you sunnier, more attractive and improve your self-image a great deal. The problem is how long it will last. When the dark roots start to show again, it’s back to the salon. One visits too often and you can seriously damage your hair. In the end there is a danger that it will even fall out.

83.__________

You may not think that a tattoo(文身) would improve your appearance, but it’s certainly fashionable, and for many people that’s the same thing. A little red rose on your shoulder can seem like a good idea at that time, but how do you get rid of it later? Worse still, there’s very real danger of getting a serious disease such as HIV or hepatitis(肝炎) from dirty needles if you go to an unqualified tattoo artist.

84.__________

The bad news is that if you want to look good and stay looking good, you will have to accept the facts.

A hectic(发热) life style is no excuse. For the face, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep, because it is at night that the skin repairs itself. For the rest of your body, make sure you have a good diet and keep active. That’s all there is to it. Sorry! No one said it would be fun.

Writing

Nowadays, more and more adults and young people go to evening school to improve themselves. The idea of permanent education is popular with people both at work and at school, even those who are retired.

There are a few reasons for this social phenomenon. Firstly, more practical knowledge, such as a good command of a foreign language and computer skills, will provide people with better and wide job opportunities. For adults, especially for those who are at present laid down from their work, they will be well prepared when they return to the job market. For young parents, they can tutor their children after they gain new knowledge.

There is a Chinese old saying: Life is short and art is long. Permanent education is necessary in our society.

The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. For those of you who don't know, an idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves. If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. They are like puzzles and even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they've never heard of. With that in mind, here are five common English idioms that you can use in a variety of Situations. 1.Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work) This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. You can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your friend is being mean or nasty for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act together. 2.Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down) This is a somewhat impolite way of telling someone that they are overreacting and that they need to relax. Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something insignificant. If your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.
