Advise:

1.put forward a couple questions to make sure that he really had thought it through

2.Once decide to study a major you truly like, should carry on no matter

how hard it is, it will pay you back someday

3.What you learned in class might not be directly relevant to your job,

but the abilities of critical thinking and problem solving could be

applied to your future work

Advice: keep studying business, but take music lessons

in his spare time. Reasons:

He already prepared all to get into business school, so he should not

just abandon it partway through. That would be such a waste of time and money.

Will not regret having a business degree. Any higher education is

helpful as you hunt jobs and start your career.

In his spare time, he can absolutely continue to learn Music. Maybe

he could join a band after graduation and try to be a professional musician.

Sample

I would give my friend the following suggestions. First of all, I would have a nice conversation with my friend. I would put forward a couple questions that I concern to see if he really had thought it through, like what is the biggest trouble of learning business, how much do you

love music, do you have any plans for future career, things like that. If he has made up his mind to do so, I would back him up. Second, I would share my understanding of college education. What you learned in class might not be directly relevant to your job, but the abilities of critical thinking and problem solving could be applied to your future work and life. Once you decide to pursue a major you truly like, please carry on no matter how hard it is, you will pay you back someday.

Task 2:

Some people prefer to work alone, other prefer to work with others. Which do you prefer? Explain your answer in details.

work alone

1.much more effective than group study.

2.group discussion is too time-consuming, because we need time to gather up. It takes time for transportation too. There is a huge chance that the discussion will soon get off track.

Work with others

Sample

As a student, I prefer to study alone for the following reasons. First, individual study is much more effective than group study. For example, I can skip content that I’m already familiar with, or spend as much time as needed on things I don’t quite understand. On the other hand, I don't like doing group studies much, because we need time to gather up. It takes time for transportation too. There is a huge chance that the discussion will soon get off track. People joke around a lot after they get to know each other and become friends.

Task 3:

The school plans to hold graduation ceremony on the grasslands of

campus because guests are able to appreciate beautiful view of the school and Jenkins Hall cannot accommodate increasing number of people. The man doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Firstly, he thinks people will focus on the ceremony instead of looking around when it begins.

Second, there aren’t too many graduates this year, there will be enough seats available. What’s more, the ceremony will be broadcast live in the student center, let alone some people would love to attend the ceremony in the hall.

Task 4:

Appeasement behavior means when social animals are facing conflict, the inferior ones yield to the superior ones to seek peace instead of a fight. The professor gave an example of wolves. Wolves live in groups, they hunt and share food together. If a little wolf takes away more food, the brother wolf will threaten the little one. Then the little thing will lie on the ground with all the furs flat, which helps get rid of a war. Task 5:

The woman’s problem is she had applied for a dorm on campus, which is less expensive, but she found it’s near a construction site. She has loads of projects to do, and she needs a quiet space. There are two solutions for her. First is to reapply a dorm but she has to pay more. Second is to live here and study in the library, but she wants to finish her assignment at home.

Task 6:

The professor talks about two ways to make a company’s product unique. The first way is to emphasize the product’s quality in the ad. Say a computer company, when they sell their computer speaker, they stress it enjoys better sound quality and it can distinguish different sound track

in music. The second way is to highlight its features. For example, a pasta sauce company acclaims their sauce are spicier in order to compete in the saturated market. Customers who love spicy food would be appealed to buy their brand.

(4) Questions 11-20 Philosophy in the second half of the 19th century was based more on biology and history than on mathematics and physics. Revolutionary thought drifted away from metaphysics and epistemology and shifted more towards ideologies in science, politics, and sociology. Pragmatism became the most vigorous school of thought in American philosophy during this time, and it continued the empiricist tradition of grounding knowledge on experience and stressing the inductive procedures of experimental science. The three most important pragmatists of this period were the American philosophers Charles Peirce (1839-1914), considered to be the first of the American pragmatists, William James (1842-1910), the first great American psychologist, and John Dewey (1859-1952), who further developed the pragmatic principles of Peirce and James into a comprehensive system of thought that he called “experimental naturalism”, or “instrumentalism”. Pragmatism was generally critical of traditional western philosophy, especially the notion that there are absolute truths and absolute values. In contrast, Josiah Royce (1855-1916), was a leading American exponent of idealism at this time, who believed in an absolute truth and held that human thought and the external world were unified. Pragmatism called for ideas and theories to be tested in practice, assessing whether they produced desirable or undesirable results. Although pragmatism was popular for a time in Europe, most agree that it epitomized the American faith in know-how and practicality, and the equally American distrust of abstract theories and ideologies. Pragmatism is best understood in its historical and cultural context. It arose during a period of rapid scientific advancement, industrialization, and material progress; a time when the theory of evolution suggested to many thinkers that humanity and society are in a perpetual state of progress. This period also saw a decline in traditional religious beliefs and values. As a result, it became necessary to rethink fundamental ideas about values, religion, science, community, and individuality. Pragmatists regarded all theories and institutions as tentative hypotheses and solutions.

Although only 1 person in 20 in the Colonial period lived in a city, the cities had a disproportionate influence on the development of North America. They were at the cutting edge of social change. It was in the cities that the elements that can be associated with modern capitalism first appeared — the use of money and commercial paper in place of barter, open competition in place of social deference and hierarchy, with an attendant rise in social disorder, and the appearance of factories using coat or water power in place of independent craftspeople working with hand tools. "The cities predicted the future," wrote historian Gary. B. Nash, "even though they were but overgrown villages compared to the great urban centers of Europe, the Middle East and China." Except for Boston, whose population stabilized at about 16,000 in 1760, cities grew by exponential leaps through the eighteenth century. In the fifteen years prior to the outbreak of the War for independence in 1775, more than 200,000 immigrants arrived on North American shores. This meant that a population the size of Boston was arriving every year, and most of it flowed into the port cities in the Northeast. Philadelphia's population nearly doubted in those years, reaching about 30,000 in 1774, New York grew at almost the same rate, reaching about 25,000 by 1775. The quality of the hinterland dictated the pace of growth of the cities. The land surrounding Boston had always been poor farm country, and by the mid-eighteenth century it

One of the most significant changes is the issue of whom we young people depend on when making a decision. In the past, young people usually depended on their older family members, especially their parents. However, in contemporary society, we young adults tend to make choice on our own. Here are the reasons. Admittedly, in the past, the ways they acquired information, most of which come from experience, were limited. It was parents who are much more experienced than their children. In this case, they tended to listen to parents’ advice and let them to control determination. As we all know, over the several decades, parents made the decision for their children who they would marry with in China. At that time, girls had no chance to meet the young men with the same age. However, their parents had the permission to know their children’s future partners through various ways. Without doubt, it was a right choice to depend on their parents when making a decision in the past. However, we can get access to a great amount of information, which do good to decision making nowadays. Surfing on the internet, clicking on the mouse, news will display on your computer screen within seconds. What’s more, after educating, we have learnt knowledge in a systematic way, which enable us to understand ourselves and the world better. All of these create a good atmosphere for us young people to make decision on ourselves. According to a survey conducted by Peking University aiming to find out how students choose their majors, 80 percent of students depend on their own while less than 20% decided by their parents or teachers instead. Most students are independent nowadays. They would listen to their parents, but it is themselves who determine the final choice. Another important reason is that some of adults’ experience work less effectively on our generation because conditions change rapidly in the information age. In the past, it was less likely for youngsters to move out of their hometowns while we usually move from one place to another nowadays. So parents’ idea might not fit our situation any more. Consequently, we prefer to make a decision depend on our own experience. In sum, for the reasons I mentioned above, I totally agree that in contemporary society, we young adults are better able to make choice on our own.
