While an economic crisis results in untold misery for countries and their people, a new study of health in Cuba has suggested there could be a silver lining during lean times.

Researchers appear to have implied that people can lose weight during a recession (经济萧条) due to a reduction in eating and increasing physical activities. Their dramatic findings, published online in the British Medical Journal, were based on a study in Cuba, where the population suffered food and fuel shortages following the economic crisis of the early 1990s caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union. This resulted in an average of 4 to 5 kg being shed by the people and subsequent (随后的) rapid declines in deaths from diabetes and coronary heart disease.

The scientists from the University of Alcala, in Madrid, also discovered that when Cubans put the weight back on, cases of diabetes appeared again. The researchers concluded that the Cuban crisis could be lessons to Britain. They suggested that an average weight loss of just eleven pounds across the UK could cut deaths from heart disease by a third while the death rate of type 2 diabetes, the form of the condition related to obesity, could also be halved.

Whole population trends in food consumption and transport policies linked to physical activity could reduce the burden of two major illnesses, said the researchers. “During the deepest period of the economic crisis in Cuba, from 1991 to 1995, food was scarce and access to gas was greatly reduced, virtually decreasing motorised transport and causing the industrial and agricultural sectors to shift to manual intensive labour,” said Prof Manuel Franco, who led the international team of researchers form Spain, Cuba and the United States.

“We found a populat ion-wide loss of 4-5 kg in weight in a relatively healthy population was accompanied by

diabetes death falling by half and death from coronary heart disease falling by a third. So far, no country or regional population has successfully reduced the distribution of body mass index (身体质量指数) or reduced the prevalence (流行) of obesity through public health campaigns or targeted treatment programmes.”

59. The following factors contribute to Cubans’ losing weight EXCEPT ______.

A. less food consumption

B. fuel shortage

C. the falling cases of diabetes

D. increasing physical activities

60. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The Cuban crisis could be lessons to Britain.

B. Heart diseases have something to do with obesity.

C. British people mostly die from heart diseases and diabetes.

D. The problem of obesity can never be settled through public efforts.

61. The author’s attitude towards the topic is ______.

A. objective

B. skeptical

C. optimistic

D. conservative

62. What does the whole passage mainly talk about?

A. The economic crisis has negative effect on many countries.

B. Increasing physical activities is necessary during a recession.

C. Eating less is a solution to obesity.

D. The recession may benefit your health.

C

The oldest forms of medicine are enjoying a comeback. Modern holistic medicine is an approach that treats the whole patient, not just the disease. It is a way to maintain good health rather than cure illness. The most important influences on today’s holistic(整体的)medicine are ancient Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, both of which promoted whole body health.

Holistic medicine usually combines diet, physical exercise and meditation, together with other alternative techniques such as massage (按摩)and acupuncture(针炙). Herbal treatment ,a practice of treating illness by using plants, is influenced by the writings of Culpeper as well as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Homeopathy (顺势疗法)is one of the forms of holistic medicine which is widely practiced in Europe and the USA. Homeopathy began in Germany in the early 1800s, when Samuel Hahnemann described how very tiny doses(剂量)of a drug had an effect on his patients. According to Hahnemann, the more the drug was diluted(稀释), the stronger its effects. The substance selected would produce similar effects to the disease itself if given in large doses. In the UK homeopathy is regarded as a non-traditional but just about acceptable treatment.

Meditation and contemplation have an important role in holistic medicine. They were brought to Europe by Indian teachers who combined Indian Ayurvedic medicine with Western beliefs. Transcendental meditation(超脱静坐)is one of the best known of these techniques. People repeat words inside their head to reach a state of deep relaxation.

The holistic movement has made many doctors look at the whole patient, not just the disease. Life-style, emotional problems and diet are just some of the factors that can affect a person’s health. Holistic medicine emphasizes good diet, exercise and fresh air, all of which contribute to health. Some clinics now offer holistic medicine along with traditional treatments, so that their patients can choose a combination of treatments that suits them. One problem with holistic medicine is that it is difficult for people to be sure a doctor is reliable. To solve this, many countries want alternative doctors to form professional bodies.

63. Modern holistic medicine centers upon ______.

A. curing a disease

B. herbal treatment

C. continuous development

D. keeping patients healthy

64. The principle of homeopathy is that ______.

A. the large doses of medicine that will not be harmful will take better effect

B. the disease will be cured sooner by taking larger doses of medicine

C. a small thinner dose of medicine will be more effective

D. the doses of medicine depend on how serious the illness is

65. Which of the following titles best sums up the passage?

A. Holistic Medicine

B. Traditional Medicine Returns

C. History of Medicine

D. Combination of Treatments Works

66. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Relaxation is the key of holistic treatment.

B. Holistic medicine needs to become more trustworthy.

C. Holistic treatment is more beneficial than traditional treatments.

D. Holistic medicine will become the most welcome treatment soon.

D

When I Retire, We Will See the World

It was 1 p.m. Fritz said good night to his wife. She was watching TV. He went to bed. Tomorrow was a big day. It was his last day of work. Thirty years with the federal government. Thirty years of flying out of town for weeks on end. Thirty years of interviews, meetings, and heavy briefcases. Tomorrow it would all be over. Not that he didn’t like it. He had enjoyed his career.

Fritz felt blessed. His father had had a tough life as an unskilled laborer. Whenever Fritz was a bit discouraged or upset, he thought about his overworked and underpaid father. He thanked God for his own good life, and for the fact that he had been able to make his dad’s last years comfortable.

His two children were married and had their own careers. His wife Paige kept busy with, among other things, her bridge club. She had tried to get him interested in bridge, but without success. Fritz was content with his own Friday night poker group.

Friday morning, he went to work for the very last time. Those who knew him well would miss him. Fritz was a really nice guy. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. Some people might have thought he was a little dull, but he was intelligent, a hard worker, and a team player. He had taken only three weeks of sick leave in 30 years.

A small group took him out to lunch. When he returned from lunch, the whole office gathered around for cake, ice cream, a farewell card, and a few short speeches. They presented him with various going- away gifts, including a big, paperback Us atlas(地图集). It listed all the motels, campgrounds, national parks, tourists spots, and other information to help guide a relaxed traveler throughout the god old USA. He had told his friends that he and Paige were going to spend a couple of years visiting all the places that he never had gotten to explore while there on business. As a final gift, his supervisor told him to take the rest of the day off.

Paige’s car wasn’t in the driveway when he got home. She was probably shopping for some traveling clothes. Maybe she was out arranging a dinner at a restaurant that evening for just the two of them. That would b nice.

But something was wrong. When he hung up his jacket, he saw that the bedroom closet was half empty. Paige’s clothes were gone. Her shoes were not on the closet floor. Confused, he looked around the bedroom.

He saw an envelope on the lamp stand. Inside it were two pieces of paper. One informed him of a divorced proceeding(诉讼). The other was a hand-written note from Paige. “I’m so sorry,” it began. She said that her lawyer had told her to wait until today. If she had sought divorce a year earlier, like her boyfriend had suggested, she would not have been able to qualify for 50 percent of Fritz’s pension. She hoped that he would find it in his heart to forgive her. She felt terrible about this, she wrote, because “you’ve been so good to me. But I can’t ignore my own heart.”

Fritz sat immobile on the edge of the bed, with her note in his hand and her words burning in his brain.

Maybe an hour later, the phone rang. He picked it up on the fifth ring. It was Bob, wondering if Fritz was going to play poker later that night.

67. We can learn from paragraph 2 and 3 that ______.

A. the hero was satisfied with his life

B. the heroine wanted to divorce

C. the couple got along well with each other

D. the children lived apart from their parents

68. Paige wasn’t divorced from Fritz a year earlier because ______.

A. her lawyer advised her to forget it

B. she wanted to share Fritz’s money

C. her boyfriend suggested her doing so

D. she felt terrible to desert her husband

69. Which of the following can best describe his wife Paige?

A. Considerate but casual

B. Disloyal but honest

C. Devoted and clever

D. Selfish and tricky

70. What do the words “see the world” in the title imply?

A. Find out the truth

B. Make more friends in the world

C. Travel around the world

D. Experience a divorce proceeding

You want to be confident and feel c onfident, but what if you’re starting with little or no confidence? True self-confidence isn’t an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love.

Recognize your insecurities

What does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points.

Get rid of insecurities gradually

Each day you should weaken it. There’s no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply can’t). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as “bad”.

Identify your successes

Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (自卑) is a state of mind in which you’ve declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

Be Positive

Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior—they can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak positively about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.

Apply “facial feedback theory”

Studies su rrounding what’s called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So by looking in the mirror and smiling every day, you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

Help others

When you know you’re helpful to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people’s lives (even if it’s just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you’ll know that

you are a positive force in the world—which will boost yourself confidence.

Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, and accomplishing your goals will be just around the corner.

He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace, and stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till without stopping, and continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on. In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100. This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment. The outlines were: in a commonplace(普通的) environment at an inappropriate hour: 1

The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “shmily” around the ho use, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more. They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal. “Shmily” was written in the steam left on t he mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. There was no end to the places where “shmily” would pop up. Little notes with “shmily” were found on car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were put inside shoes and left und er pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel(壁炉架)and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture. It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love—one that is pure and enduring (持久的). However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. It was based on passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmoth er had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house any more. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. “Shmily.” It was written in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet (花束). As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s coffin and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Through his tears and grief, the song came: S-h-m-i-l-y: See How Much I Love You. 21. The first paragraph is mainly about ________. A.what the word “shmily” means B.how the author’s grandparents played their special game C.how the author appreciated her grandparents’ game D.how the author’s grandparents cared for each other 22. The underlined phrase “pop up” in Paragraph 1 means ________. A. appear B. change C. survive D. work
