1. The science of the Antarctic: An exploration by air and sea

2023, 7 days

Join New Scientist for an interesting trip exploring the world’s largest ocean preserve(保护区)and most original sea ecosystem(生态系统).

Day1: Arrive into Punta Arenas (Chile)

Arrive into Punta Arenas, where you will be met and transported to the group hotel. Punta Arenas lies at the foot of the Andes with noticeable views across the Straits of Magellan to Tierra Del Fuego. It is Patagonia’s liveliest and most interesting city. Everything in the town is within walking distance. Days2-3: Observe Elephant Island

While sailing around the White Continent, huge icebergs announce your arrival in Antarctic waters. Observe Elephant Island, where the shipwrecked(遭遇海难的) worker of Shackleton found shelter while he and five finest men carried on towards South Georgia in a tiny lifeboat. The guides will explain the story. Stormy conditions hardly allow for ashore landing, but you will still see the historic island from the ship.

Days4-6: Explore South Georgia

Tour the protected waters of South Georgia. The wildlife on South Georgia is rich, especially the birdlife. Visits to a rookery containing 150,000king penguins or the nesting home of thousands of black-browed albatrosses are remarkable wildlife experiences. If the weather is favourable, visits to Fortuna Bay, Salisbury Plains, Prion Island, and Elsehul Bay are also planned.

Day7: Depart Santiago

After breakfast, the tour has finished and you can fly home or spend a few days in the fascinating capital city of Santiago. Talk to our specialists about extending your holiday—we are experts in creating tailor-made holidays in this area.

2. My daughter has a new app on her phone that can clear up and improve old photos. She used it to make copies of pictures from my old photo albums, brighten them up, and email them back to me. There were pictures of Mom, Dad, Grandma, my brothers, me and my first dog Duke. Looking at them brought back so many loving, happy memories. I even put one on my laptop computer as my new screensaver.

It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, across from the woodstove, next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy sweatshirt. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful shine in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a boy, reading an old book.

It is strange too that 50 years later that boy still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, old books, Snoopy, hugging dogs, and reading books on cold winter days. Yet, when I look in the mirror now all I see is thinning, graying hair, age spots, and lots of wrinkles.

Once in a while I look into my eyes in the mirror. They are hiding behind glasses now. They are set a little deeper in my eyes. The innocence(天真) in them has been replaced with wisdom. But they still have that same joyful shine.

Looking at the little boy smiling at me from the computer screen and that 56-year-old man looking back at me in the mirror can be a bit confusing at times. They seem so different. Still, they are both me.

3. A newly restored(修复的) house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, House of the Vettii, opened to the public on Tuesday.

The house likely belonged to two former slaves(奴隶) who became rich through the wine trade. The house offers visitors a look at everyday life in Pompeii. The city was buried by volcanic ash(灰)

from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The restoration of the house is yet another sign of the rebirth of Pompeii.

“House of the Vettii is like the history of Pompeii and actually of Roman society within one house,” said Pompeii’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel. He said it shows the last period of Pompeian-made wall paintings.

The restoration of the wall paintings contained a new, better method using wax(蜡). Zuchtriegel thinks the wall paintings show the dreams, imagination and worries of the owners because they lived between these images.

And who were these owners? The Vet tis were two men—Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus. Pompeii experts say they were once slaves who were later freed. It is believed that they became wealthy through the wine trade. Some think the two were brothers.

Perhaps the Vet ti us men saw their own life story in the image of Hercules who overcame great difficulties. This possibility interests Zuchtriegel.

Architect Arianna Spinosa is director of the restoration. She said it represents the perfect Pompeii home, because of both the wall paintings and the architecture.

The house was discovered in the late19th century. It was closed in 2002 for urgent restoration work. After a partial reopening in 2016, it was closed again in 2020 for the final part of the work, which included the restoration of the wall paintings, floor and structural elements.

1. Which of the following might be the owners of the house?

A.Officers. B.Painters. C.Businessmen. D.Slaveowners. 2. What can be known from the paintings according to Zuchtriegel?

A.The method of making wine. B.Slaves’ working scenes.

C.The building process of a house. D.Feelings of the house owners.

3. What happened to the house during the last 20 years?

A.It was greatly damaged. B.It was repaired and improved.

C.It was crowded with visitors. D.It was hidden away from people.

4. What can be the best title for the text?

A.House in Pompeii Shows Ancient Roman Life

B.Volcanic Eruption Caused Disaster in Pompeii

C.Pompeii Came to Life Due to Ancient Houses

D.Two Slaves Created Wonder of Paintings

4. A fishing community in southern Brazil has an unusual helper: wild dolphins. Stories of people and dolphins working together to catch fish go back thousands of years. But storytellers have told the human side of the story. Until recently, it was impossible to know how dolphins have benefited

from the relationship. Now, underwater listening devices can follow them underwater and suggest an answer.

In the coastal city of Laguna, scientists have used drones(无人机), underwater sound recordings and other tools to track dolphins. The scientists can see how local people and dolphins cooperate and benefit from each other’s work. The most successful humans and dolphins are skilled at reading each other’s body language.

This study clearly shows that both dolphins and humans are paying attention to each other’s behavior, and that dolphins provide a clue to when the nets should be thrown. By working with the dolphins, the people catch more fish, and the dolphins are more successful in hunting, too.

In Laguna, the water is cloudy, so people are unable to see the fish. But the dolphins can send out sound waves and receive the sound waves reflected to them. Thus, they can find the fish. As the dolphins make the fish move toward the coast, the people run into the water holding fish nets. They wait for dolphins to sign exactly where fish are—the most common sign is what locals call “a jump”, or a sudden deep dive.

The researchers used underwater listening devices, or microphones, to track the positions of the dolphins and fish. Drones recorded the action from above. The more closely the people timed throwing their net to the dolphins’ signals, the more likely they were to catch a large number of fish.

When the nets fall in the water, it startles the fish. They then break into smaller schools that are easier for dolphins to hunt. The dolphins sometimes also take one or two fish from the net.

Still, the researchers in Brazil think that the Laguna alliance maybe in danger. Pollution threatens the dolphins and there are fewer local fisheries. Scientists hope that more attention to the unusual cooperation can help drive support to protect it.

1. Which can best describe the relationship between the local people and dolphins?

A.It is a win-win situation. B.People are a threat to dolphins.

C.Dolphins need help from people. D.People use dolphins wisely.

2. How do the dolphins find the fish?

A.By seeing through the cloudy water. B.By diving into the water suddenly.

C.By following the fish smell closely. D.By sending out and receiving sound

waves.

3. What does the underlined word “startles” in paragraph 6mean?

A.Frightens. B.Catches. C.Attracts. D.Gathers.

4. What do Brazilian researchers think of the traditional fishing?

A.It will be more popular. B.It will be more valued.

C.It is close to ending. D.It is out of date.

5. Ways to Improve Your Health for Free

Improving your health doesn’t have to be fancy, costly or difficult. There are plenty of free and simple ways to get your health on track. And you can feel good doing it. Here are five ways that you can improve your health for free.

Take regular walks.

Physical activity is an important part of good health. 1 Consider a walk around your neighborhood, head to one of the region’s beautiful parks or find other ideas for adding movements to your day.

Try to stick to asleep schedule.

Studies suggest that a regular sleep schedule can help with your daily life. 2 It also gives your body and mind a chance to relax and can improve your emotions.

Practice yoga or floor exercises.

3 You can find free instructional videos online to help you try yoga or floor exercises―whether you’re a beginner or more advanced.

4

Many studies have shown that looking at a screen for long periods of time can affect your health. It could be anything from tired eyes and stiff(僵硬的) joints from sitting to anxiety from feeling disconnected with other people. Experts ask parents to limit screen time for children to two hours per day. Adults benefit from the same guideline. Consider how your household can balance screen time with other activities.

Create new habits.

This could be as simple as making a to-do list each day or doing a 15-minute exercise before bed. No matter what you choose, getting into a regular action can benefit both your mental and physical health. 5 If you’re ready for more, consider reaching out to your Peace Health provider for ideas and support.

After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings. “What are you doing with that money?" Jackie asked her granddaughter, “I'm taking it to school," Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. “I'm going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn't get milk- her mom doesn't have milk money and I do." Jackie's heart melted at Sunshine's words. Choked with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms. Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher, Rita Hausher, and handed her the money Sunshine had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine's class and about half don't get milk. It costs $ 0.45 a carton(纸盒).The total adds up to about $ 180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day. After dropping Sunshine off at school, Jackie posted a tearful video on social media to explain her granddaughter's plan. To her surprise, dozens of people offered to donate toward the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine's class can get free milk for the rest of the year. Jackie said Sunshine doesn't see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to help friends. "She doesn't understand the effect she's brought about," Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to."
