第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, Leonard Bernstein gave a concert in Berlin, including Beethoven's Ode to Joy, with the word "Joy" changed to "Freedom" in the lyrics sung. The orchestra(管弦乐队)were drawn from both East and West Germany, as well as the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States.

Freedom was in the air and it was not just for people. The wall between East and West Germany had also kept a large population of wild pigs within the eastern forests of Brandenburg. The wall's falling down made it easier for the big pigs—a very big one can weigh over 300 pounds—to leave the woodlands and walk into the town. Warm winters and easy access to food have helped the population increase. Now about 10,000 wild pigs walk around Berlin.

The nature of the beast has added to the boom(兴旺)."The pigs are intelligent," says Marc Franusch, a spokesman for the Berlin forestry department. "They learn to use the neighborhoods. They get used to people, dogs, and traffic."

The wild pigs tend to travel in small groups and have been found searching rubbish and gardens, feeding their piglets(小猪)in the shadow of parked cars, and crossing busy roads. On average, the animals are involved in one traffic accident every day. And

despite the fact that it's illegal, some Berliners have been known to give the pigs food.

Though wild pigs are protected under German law, the city's forestry department is permitted to kill 2,000 of the creatures every year, targeting mostly young adult animals in forests surrounding Berlin. Pigs within city limits are only shot if they make an immediate threat. No humans have yet been seriously wounded by them, but local dogs have been the victims of their tusks. "The forestry department is not aiming to get rid of the pigs," explains Franusch, "but we do have to reduce dangerous situations."

56.The concert in the first paragraph is given to .

A.celebrate Bernstein's success B.remind people of fighting for rights C.show the artists' delight of life D.express people's joy for freedom 57.The following factors contribute to the boom of wild pigs EXCEPT . A.the Berlin Wall B.adequate food C.their own nature D.warm winter

58.From the text we can know that .

A.in Berlin people can never kill any wild pig

B.it is against law to offer food to wild pigs

C.wild pigs each weigh more than three hundred pounds

D.traffic accidents are mainly caused by wild pigs in Berlin

59.The article mainly talks about .

A.why wild pigs in Berlin enjoy so much freedom

B.when wild pigs were united in Berlin

C.how wild pigs are living in Berlin

D.what damage wild pigs have done to Berliners

At times we all get angry when we are driving. It might be because we are stuck in a traffic jam or stuck behind a very slow driver. It might be because we think another driver has done something very stupid and dangerous. Whatever the reason, it seems that getting angry in a car is something which happens more and more often and there is now a special term for it --- “road rage”. Some experts even think that road rage is a kind of mental illness! How can we recognize this “illness” of road rage?

There are two kinds of road rage: aggressive driving and aggressive reactions to the way other people are driving. Aggressive driving can take different forms:

●Driving much faster than the speed limit.

●Increasing your speed very quickly.

●Driving very close behind the car in front and sounding the horn or flashing

the headlights.

●Changing lanes very suddenly and blocking another car.

●Moving into a parking space where another car is trying to park.

There are also different reactions to the way other people are driving. These include.

●Making rude signs at people.

●Shouting at people and threatening them.

●Deliberately driving into another person’s car.

●Hitting somebody.

●Using a weapon such as a baseball bat, or even a gun or a knife.

Road rage is certainly not a joke. There have been incidents of road rage which

have led to serious injuries and even murder.

Experts think that one reason for road rage is that films show a lot of examples

of fast and aggressive driving such as car chases where this kind of driving seems

to be positive.

Experts also think that the punishments for dangerous driving are not serious

enough.

Experience shows that driving problems can be controlled, but it takes a long

time. In the UK in the last 30 years, the police have been quite successful in

reducing the number of people who drink and drive. They are now working to stop

people using mobile phones when they are driving. Let’s hope they can have the

same success with the road rage.

60. Why do people get angry when driving?

A. They are stuck in a traffic jam.

B. They are stuck behind a very slow driver

C. They think another driver has done something very stupid and dangerous.

D. All of the above

61. Which of the following statements does NOT describe aggressive driving?

A. Drinking and driving

B. Changing lanes very suddenly and blocking another car.

C. Moving into a parking space where another car is trying to park.

62. Road rage happens possibly because______.

A. the drivers are drunk

B. the punishments are not serious enough

C. we’re in a fast-changing society

D. it won’t cause serious injuries or death

63. What’s the tone of the last paragraph?

A. Sad

B. Cold

C. Optimistic

D. Exciting

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a big pany, I told him honestly

that the principal reason that I was interviewing with them was my need to keep my

family in Boston. My wife had recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would

help me reduce some pain for my 16-year-old daughter and me. It was important to me

to keep her present high school.

Bruce, the interviewer, was politely kind, but he didn’t search any further. He

acknowledged(承认) my loss and, with great respect, moved on to another subject. After

the next round of interviews, Bruce took me to lunch with another manager. Then he

asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had 3 children. I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had and it was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a loved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, should I need help or just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help.

From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea if we could ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of life’s greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview process into an act of caring and supporting for another person in a time of extreme need.

64. According to the passage, the interviewer, Bruce, was very _______.

A. generous

B. kind

C. happy

D. mean

65. The underlined word "principal" in the first paragraph probably means _____.

A. main

B. unimportant

C. necessary

D. possible

66. Which of the following statement is NOT true?

A. The writer’s daughter was studying in Boston at that time.

B. Both the writer and the interviewer experienced the same pain.

C. Bruce was a senior manager of a big firm.

D. Bruce wanted to make friends with him because he gave him his business card and home phone number.

Over the years, Americans have bee used to salt. Most people have no idea how much salt they consume-on average, about 9 to 12 gram per person per day, according to the American Heart Association. That's twice the amount remended by the government. A new study last week showed eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The scientists said the results would be thirteen percent fewer heart attacks, eight percent fewer strokes(中风), four percent fewer deaths and eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease.

Researchers also found that the benefits would be greatest for African Americans and women. As a group, African Americans tend to have higher blood pressure than the general population, and "many studies suggest that they may be more sensitive to salt," says Dr.Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, an epidemiologist(流行病学家)at the University of California, San Francisco. Her analysis found that a reduction of 3 gram of salt per day would reduce heart attacks 8% on average; among African Americans, that rate would drop 10%.A similar result was found in women, whose stroke risk dropped 8% with a 3-g reduction in salt intake; in men, the risk fell 5%.

They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a

national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt.

However, other scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health

of millions of people.

Michael Alderman, a high blood pressure expert and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. But he says studies have not clearly shown that lowering salt means fewer heart attacks or strokes.

“Salt has other biological effects. Calling for reductions in the national

diet could have good effects, as well as harmful results. There is not enough evidence either way,”said Michael Alderman.

67.Eating too much salt may lead to the following EXCEPT .

A.stroke B.heart disease C.high blood pressure D.lung cancer 68.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Most Americans take more salt than advised.

B.African women eat more salt than Americans.

C.One's origin determines how much salt he can eat.

D.Good health is just on the basis of having less salt.

69.The author's attitude toward the study is .

A.cold B.objective C.subjective D.doubtful

70.What's the best title of the passage?

A.The Benefits of Eating Less Salt.B.A New Study on Salt and Diseases.C.An Argument Over Salt and Health.D.The Harm Caused by Too Much Salt.

Stress is an unfortable feeling in the mind from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. Stress is often acpanied by physical symptoms like trembling, sleeping difficulties and nightmares(恶梦).

Stress is a normal part of life.In small quantities, stress is good—it can motivate you and help you be more productive. However, too much stress is harmful. It can cause general poor health as well as specific physical or mental depression. Persistent and never-ceasing stress often leads to anxiety and unhealthy behaviours like abuse of alcohol or drugs.

Certain drugs can lead to symptoms of stress due to side effects. A poor diet can also contribute to stress or anxiety.Performance stress is related to specific situations, like taking a test or making a presentation in public. Post-traumatic stress develops after an unforgettably shocking event like war, physical attacks, or a natural disaster.

Any effective ways to cope with your stress or anxiety? One step is to make a list of what you think might be making you ‘stress out’:Is something constantly on your mind? Does anything in particular make you sad or depressed?

Then, find someone you believe in who will listen to you. Often, just talking to a friend or loved one is all that is needed to relieve anxiety. Most munities also have support groups and hotlines that can help. Social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals may be needed for therapy and medication.

Also, find healthy ways to deal with stress. For example, eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, limit caffeine and alcohol.Learn and practice relaxation techniques like yoga and tai chi. Make sure to balance fun activities with your responsibilities. Spend time with people you enjoy. Find self-help books at your local library or bookstore.
